A cozy and welcoming atmosphere filled with the aroma of spices, cinnamon, and mountain wood. It’s that magical time of year again for the eagerly anticipated Christmas Markets. Our top picks are set up in the charming cities of the Dolomites—Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, Vipiteno, and Brunico—running from November 19th to January 9th. Discover the perfect gift, browse through unique handmade Christmas decorations, and enjoy a cup of hot mulled wine. While Christmas markets can now be found throughout the Alps and beyond, South Tyrol proudly holds the original tradition.

A small red toy train on tracks passes through fallen leaves at a festive outdoor Christmas market with lights, decorated stalls, and a church tower in the background at dusk.

Bolzano

The highlight of the Bolzano Christmas Market is undoubtedly the 20-meter Christmas tree in Walther Square, adorned with 1,300 twinkling lights. Known as the “Tree of Wishes,” it’s beautifully decorated with Thun ceramic angels and charms, symbols of hope and dreams. The festive atmosphere spreads across the entire city from here. Sixty-five wooden chalets are set up in the main square, and the “Christmas Park” (Alcide Berloffa Park) hosts 32 more stands. There are also many events scheduled, so not to miss one just go to the new info point at No. 11 Wheat Square, which provides dedicated brochures and maps.

After visiting the market indulge in a special “Market Menu” dinner at one of the city’s top restaurants, such as Laurin, Zur Kaiserkron, Argentieri Restaurant, Tree Brasserie, Italia&Amore, Gasthaus Fink, Löwengrube, or Batzen Häusl.

Merano

In Merano, the festive spirit centers around the Christmas Village at Piazza della Rena. Here you’ll find a large chalet where you can book a gourmet dinner or join creative workshops to craft your own advent wreath or holiday centerpiece.

The spa park will also be transformed into a winter wonderland for the occasion: during the “Silent Lights” you can enjoy an exciting and magical experience surrounded by nature, moving among light, wind, sound and landscape.

A festive outdoor Christmas market at dusk features a red toy train ride, illuminated reindeer decorations, and crowds of people near decorated stalls, with a church and clock tower in the background. A snowy path lined with glowing lanterns leads through a winter forest at sunset, with tall pine trees and snow-covered mountains in the background under a colorful sky.

Bressanone

In the weeks before Christmas, you can feel a very special flair in Bressanone. Snow glistens from the surrounding mountain peaks into the valley and the pistes on the local mountain Plose are also ready for the first ski turns.
When it slowly gets darker, you can no longer escape the Christmas atmosphere in Bressanone, the atmospheric light illuminate the streets and the smell of mulled wine made from regional ingredients, warm soup and biscuits brings locals and guests to the cathedral Square of Brixen.
Here you can find products that are mainly made or finished in South Tyrol. Whether it's individual gift ideas for friends and family or simply a cosy get-together with homemade mulled wines, dumpling variations or sweets. At the Bressanone Christmas Market you can simply enjoy the contemplative Christmas atmosphere surrounded by the traditional wooden huts, the festively decorated trees and the cathedral chapter.

A hand reaches out to touch a delicate, hand-painted glass bell ornament hanging on a decorated Christmas tree branch. Other similar ornaments are visible in the background. A snowy street in a small European town with colorful buildings, festive decorations, and people dressed in winter clothes walking and shopping; a church with a red dome stands in the background, surrounded by mountains.

Vipiteno

Christmas in Vipiteno is all about the bells. Stalls feature delicate glass bells, a traditional and treasured gift. The sounds of the season are everywhere: a 25-bell carillon installed on the Tower of Twelve chimes daily. In the North Park’s “Sound Forest,” visitors can find sound installations and snow-themed games. On Mount Horse, there’s a special bell where children can leave their letters to Santa Claus, who will receive them directly.

A tree decorated with glowing white string lights and many large, shiny red ornaments, creating a festive, holiday atmosphere against a dark night sky. Snow-covered rugged mountain peaks under a pastel sky at sunrise or sunset, with the soft light casting gentle pink and purple hues on the landscape.

Brunico

Christmas in Brunico is defined by its distinctive aroma, a blend of ginger, cinnamon, pine, and the scent of a cozy fireplace. With the Kronplatz Mountain in the background, while strolling through the streets of the Old Town you will feel this unique mix of Alpine comfort and Italian Dolce Vita. That’s why a visit to the Christmas market in Brunico is an absolute must in the pre-festive season. The joyful anticipation is taking over the city. Lovely decorated stands offer arts and craft, sweet treats, handmade decorations and culinary delights. And what’s better than spending a cozy winter evening together with friends while having a mug of mulled wine?
